Duration: 2-hour workshop

About the workshop

Imagine you are facilitating or leading a problem-solving session, and someone says something confrontational. Tension rises, and all eyes turn to you. What do you do?

One of the most powerful tools in the facilitator toolkit is paraphrasing. But in the heat of the moment, how do you choose what to reflect back? What would it take to uncover and express a positive value or quality hidden in a challenging remark? This workshop will offer a framework to help paraphrase confrontational contributions in ways that foster connection and understanding across divides.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Guide you in consciously choosing what to notice and name in group interactions.
  2. Provide a framework to help paraphrase confrontational contributions in ways that foster connection across divides.
  3. Demonstrate embodied techniques to stay present and composed during heated conflicts.

NOTE: This workshop will be recorded for distribution to all who register (breakout rooms will not be recorded).

This is a 2-hour workshop. It will take place starting at 12:00pm EDT.

Speaker:

Marjeta Novak designs and facilitates participatory, purpose-driven multi-stakeholder strategic dialogues that bring together whole systems and unlikely allies to spark new thinking, foster collaborative leadership, and move to wise action together. She is also a certified trainer and facilitator in Nonviolent Communication. This empathy-based approach is the basis for a simple yet effective framework she developed and regularly uses for interventions in a group process when conflict or tension arises.

In 2024, Marjeta relocated from her native Slovenia (Europe) to the US, bringing with her two decades of facilitation experience spanning Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania.
