This workshop is for facilitators who have worked on at least one strategic planning project–including folks who feel jaded about strategic planning. Through small group conversations and large group debriefs, we will make use of collective intelligence to explore what makes for a successful strategic planning project and what you might want to avoid.

This online session combines a networking and a workshop approach, allowing facilitators to connect and learn from each other around the work of facilitating strategic planning.

The session is designed around these two thoughts:

It’s easier to start talking to each other (to network) when there is a task at hand.

Every organization has two org charts. The first is the one on paper. The second is the one that actually determines who advances, who gets sponsored, and who holds real power. For many of the leaders you work with — people of color, LGBTQ+ professionals, people with disabilities, women in male-dominated fields — navigating the second org chart is the work behind the work. And most frameworks don't address it.

Gain knowledge of the informal power structures — the second org chart — that determine advancement in organizations and understand why this knowledge is essential for facilitators working with underestimated leaders.
Gain the ability to name and apply the three philosophical truths that undergird the POWER Framework, shifting the lens through which they see and serve the leaders they work with.

We've all been in the room when something shifts, a disagreement sharpens, a silence gets heavy, and the group looks to us to do something. This three-part cohort gives facilitators a restorative, justice-grounded toolkit for exactly those moments.

Across three weeks, we move through facilitating through conflict, designing for belonging, and holding the room when conversations turn toward racial and social justice

This is a working cohort, not a lecture series: you'll practice live in breakouts, build facilitation moves against real scenarios, and leave each session with a tool you can use the next time you're in front of a group.

Learning Objectives

In this session, participants will:

Facilitate through conflict using restorative moves. Participants will gain concrete techniques for working with tension rather than smoothing it over; naming what's happening without taking sides, de-escalating in the moment, and structuring a restorative process to reopen dialogue when a group is stuck.
Diagnose group dynamics and design for belonging in real time. Participants will build the ability to read the unspoken dynamics in a room, set and re-set norms mid-session, and design interventions that establish psychological safety and genuine belonging from the first ten minutes..
Hold the room when conversations turn toward racial and social justice. Participants will develop the self-awareness and skill to examine their own roles and behaviors as facilitators, respond rather than react when harm surfaces, and hold a group in productive discomfort. Participants will be equipped to move past performative gestures toward honest, structural practice.

Learning Objectives

In this session, participants will:

Facilitate through conflict using restorative moves. Participants will gain concrete techniques for working with tension rather than smoothing it over; naming what's happening without taking sides, de-escalating in the moment, and structuring a restorative process to reopen dialogue when a group is stuck.
Diagnose group dynamics and design for belonging in real time. Participants will build the ability to read the unspoken dynamics in a room, set and re-set norms mid-session, and design interventions that establish psychological safety and genuine belonging from the first ten minutes..
Hold the room when conversations turn toward racial and social justice. Participants will develop the self-awareness and skill to examine their own roles and behaviors as facilitators, respond rather than react when harm surfaces, and hold a group in productive discomfort. Participants will be equipped to move past performative gestures toward honest, structural practice.

In this interactive session, participants will experience play-based facilitation firsthand using the Kolab platform and learn how activities such as visual metaphor, improvisation, creative challenges, and collaborative games can increase participation, spark creativity, deepen learning, and strengthen collaboration.

Facilitator neutrality comes down to small choices: how you frame a question, what tools you pick, what you reflect back, how much power you keep or give away.

Andrea and Deborah will guide you through the same process twice, with two deliberately different approaches, dialing neutrality up and down. Through role play, debrief, and reflection, you will surface the behaviors that shape what a group produces, and leave with insights that make you a more self-aware facilitator.

Deborah Rim Moiso is an IAF Endorsed Facilitator with over 15 years of experience working with public sector organizations, NGOs, and in higher education. Specializing in environmental conflict prevention, she has deepened her practice in multi-party dialogue and the nuanced dance between neutrality and personal engagement. She also trains newcomers to facilitation, writes for SessionLab and edits the State of Facilitation report. Based in Perugia, Central Italy, she lives on a smallholding with humans, donkeys, cats, bees, and 160 olive trees.

Andrea Panzavolta is a facilitator with over 15 years of experience, responsible for planning and managing participatory projects, stakeholder engagement, and decision-making for defining urban plans through the inclusion of citizens and stakeholders. Andrea is a trainer of participatory techniques and methods. He is a coach and helps team members work together, use their creativity, and find new solutions. Since 2019, he has been a member of the International Association of Facilitators, an endorsed IAF facilitator, and was awarded the 2020 IAF Impact Award Platinum Award as a facilitator for the Regione Emilia-Romagna’s Community of Practice on Participatory Policy Making (IT).
